Amauri Giovani Grutka has been crowned champion of the inaugural partypoker LIVE Latin American Poker Championships Main Event, winning $200,000.
The Brazilian outlasted a field of 1,137 entries to claim the biggest title of his poker career at the Enjoy Punta del Este Resort and Casino on Uruguay’s south coast.
After surviving three tough days of competition that saw 135 players claim a share of the $1,102,890 prizepool, 14 players came back for Sunday’s Day 4.
At the start of the day Gonzalo Gottlieb of Argentina led the way, though he fell surprisingly early on in 11th.
Also among the early Day 4 fallers were Aquiles Espinoza of Chile, before Team partypoker Sponsored pro Kristen Bicknell hit the rail on the bubble of the unofficial final table.
Joao Simao, the Team partypoker Ambassador, had no such problems in the early stages of Day 4, quadrupling his stack to take the chip lead.
The Brazilian superstar is in red hot form at the moment, having just enjoyed an excellent week at the partypoker MILLIONS Germany where he finished second and fourth in two separate €25,000 Super High Roller events, as well as claiming fourth in the Main Event, a series of stunning results that earned him over $780,000 in total from the festival.
Grutka had wrestled back the chip lead at the start of the official final table, with 32,025,000 in chips. Chinese player Yi Lin sat in second with over 30,000,000, with Simao in third.
First to exit the final table was local hope Francisco Garcia, who took home $14,000 for his eighth-place finish. Next to go were Brazilians Lucas Sacafini and Bruno Kawauti in seventh and sixth, for $20,000 and $30,000 respectively.
Argentinian Federico Dania was the executioner of both Marcelo Azevedo in fifth ($40,000), and Team partypoker’s Simao in fourth, when his king-ten won a crucial flip against Simao’s sevens. The brilliant Brazilian added $60,000 to his burgeoning bankroll for finishing fourth.
Dania entered three-handed play with the chip lead, but he was unable to build any momentum from there, losing pot after pot and eventually being eliminated by Lin in third for $88,290.
So it was Lin of China against Grutka of Brazil heads-up for the LAPC Main Event title. The Brazilian had started the day with just 20 big blinds, but he didn’t let that stop him on Day 4 as he pulled in a succession of big pots to soar to the top of the counts.
In the very first hand of heads-up play, Grutka opened to 3,000,000 and Lin three-bet to 12,000,000. Grutka four-bet shoved and Lin called off for the rest of his stack.
Grutka turned over queens, with Lin revealing ace-king, setting up a classic race. The flop contained a queen before the rest of the board ran out safely for Grutka, giving him the LAPC Main Event title and $200,000. Lin earned $130,000 for his runner-up finish.
